On Saturday April 29, Toronto’s waterfront was buzzing with industry activity as TAAFI held its annual Animation VFX Job Fair in collaboration with our partners, Computer Animation Studios of Ontario (CASO).
At George Brown’s Waterfront Campus, more than 1,200 professionals and students attended to network and learn about the current slate of job opportunities that our industry has to offer. The Job Fair Exhibitors’ Concourse included more than 25 studios, companies and schools representing the Greater Toronto Area’s animation, VFX and gaming industries, as well as studios from Montreal and Vancouver. The TAAFIxCASO Interview Zone, studio reps also interviewed job-seeking candidates, and assessed their demo reels and portfolios.
This year marked the first time that our Job Fair event was a full partnership between two leading industry organizations, bolstered by support from by the City of Toronto as presenting sponsor. In addition to circulating the Exhibitors’ Concourse to meet with exhibitors and attendees, Toronto Mayor John Tory made his opening remarks in the Presentation Zone. Mayor Tory referred to Toronto’s animation and production industry as a unique and precious asset, and championed our diversity, innovation and growth. The Mayor also highlighted the competitive advantages of working in our industry in Toronto, as well as the international reputation of Ontario’s animation schools.
Throughout the day, attendees also watched a series of panels and presentations, including “Why Work At ____” presentations from exhibiting studio reps, and a “how-to” panel discussion about securing a first animation job in the industry in the TAAFIxCASO Presentation Zone. Startoon presented an informative workshop on the ins-and-outs of developing new creator-driven animated properties in our evolving media environment.
TAAFI and CASO would like to thank the City of Toronto for sponsoring this year’s Animation VFX Job Fair. We would also like to thank our other sponsors 9 Story Media Group, Elliott Animation, Switch Animation, Seneca College and Quantum for their support in making this year’s Job Fair the biggest ever. . Lastly, both TAAFI and CASO would especially like to thank our army of STAAFI volunteers for helping us turn our TAAFI dreams into a successful reality. Without our passionate volunteers, none of this would be possible.
